Behaviour Support Framework for Schools

PETMA© is a whole school disability and autism behaviour support framework which supports schools to develop a culture of inclusion, educational high standards provided in a safe environment. PETMA© complies with department of education Circular 0042/18 which sets out the criteria schools are required to use when considering the suitability of programmes for use in their own individual context. This circular can be accessed at this link https://assets.gov.ie/12385/86bbd228f8494bbca1d696e2b1228d13.pdf

The PETMA© model was developed following an invitation from the IPPN and NAMBSE to speak at their conferences in 2019. We were inundated with requests from schools to provide PETMA, and on a lot of occasions we were asked about a PETMA certificate instructor.

PETMA is designed for Schools who strive to provide an inclusive, safe, educational experience in an ethical, respectful and child and young person friendly-centred manner. By establishing itself as the first and only Irish behaviour management model to be accredited with the Restraint Reduction Network, as well as being BILD Certified, PETMA© can provide strong reassurances that schools supported within the PETMA© framework will be confidently, competently and most importantly, respectfully supported.

Testimonials from clients:

"As a special school committed to a positive behaviour support approach, our staff found the PETMA 2-day course extremely useful. The training has given us insight into why a child with an intellectual disability, or a behavioural/ emotional disorder, may become stressed and engage in behaviours of concern, affecting their own wellbeing and/ or the wellbeing of classmates and staff. It has provided us with valuable tools to support these children, helping us to put plans in place to reduce or prevent behaviours. It has also equipped us, when behaviours occur, to help a child to de-escalate as safely as possible and to return to a calm state. An additional benefit of PETMA training for us has been that duty of care, and a school's responsibilities relating to behavioural support, were clarified in the context of Irish law. All in all, a very informative and practical course, which I can highly recommend".

Gwenda Johnson, Principal, St. Joseph's Primary School for Children with Visual Impairment

"PETMA course has really helped our team to understand students needs, triggers, causes of aggression, barriers to learning. This has allowed our team to create effective strategies (many student led) that has enhanced their learning experience, increased happiness, and given them a much better school experience as a whole".
