A message from Martha McGinn

Director of The National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies

The National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies is Ireland's first one-stop training, and development marketplace delivered using proven Person Centred approaches. We have created links with National and International experts to design our suite of Workforce Development Tools, including former Senior HIQA inspector, TIZARD Centre University of Kent, UK, and North Dakota Centre for Persons with Disabilities.

Our decision to set up the National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies came about as a result of broad consultation within Irish Intellectual Disability Services. The Kildare Enterprise Board sponsored this consultation. Our research identified that services faced many challenges, such as:

      • Moving from System Service Provision to Person Centered Services as per New Directions
      • Person-Centred Service Model means that staff work in smaller groups across more expansive geographical areas, leaving potential organisational oversight and supervision gaps.
      • Upskilling staff from traditional support methods to the competencies required for a human rights-based model, HIQA and New Directions requirements.
      • Workforce planning to meet HIQA standards and regulations
      • Aligning staff CPD with organisational objectives.
      • Supporting an individual's capacity to make complex decisions.

Many of the organisations we consulted said they either lacked the expertise, human resources and or budgets to create the means to address these issues.

Our tools support workforce development, supervision and oversight, compliance with Irish legislation, Irish Continuing Professional Development requirements and HIQA regulations. Our programmes have accreditation or endorsement from SCI and NMBI. In addition, we are an accredited provider of the CPD group and have been Certified by BILD (British Institute of Intellectual Disabilities) ACT as complying with RRN Training Standards.
