Cerebral Palsy and Swallowing Difficulties

Cerebral Palsy is the most common motor disability in childhood. You will also develop the relevant skills knowledge and attitudes to recognise the signs and symptoms and develop strategies required to support individuals with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties safely.

Outcomes of this programme include:

  • Define cerebral palsy
  • Describe causes of cerebral palsySpecify strategies to support individuals who have cerebral palsy.
  • Understand the process of swallowing
  • Be able to define dysphagia, the different types and the signs and symptomsUnderstand the importance of identifying service users at risk of feeding eating drinking and swallowing disorders
  • Know the conditions associated with Dysphagia
  • Know the potential risk factors associated with feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing disorders and people with Intellectual Disabilities.
  • Understand the relevance of reading all relevant service users information to determine what are the needs and support requirements for feeding, eating, drinking for the individuals you will be supporting
  • Understand the need to consult with team members to identify diet, positioning and procedures appropriate for individual clients.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the roles of speech and language therapists, dentists and other team members
  • Work as a member of a team, providing feedback to supervisors
  • Develop knowledge of potential aspiration risks and how to support individuals to avoid the dangers
