The Understanding and Supporting People with Intellectual Disability online resource has been designed to present a contemporary picture and a more in-depth understanding and appreciation of what it means to have an Intellectual or multiple disabilities. It is engaging for learners and enables them to apply learning in a range of practice settings.

It supports learners to reflect on their own practice and to make changes in their practice that can positively impact on the people and disability they support.

Objectives of the Understanding and Supporting People with Intellectual Disability Module:

  • Describe the levels of intellectual disability and how these are assessed
  • Explain the known causes of intellectual disability
  • Outline the potential impact of having multiple disabilities on a person
  • Categorise the range of terms which have been used to label people with an intellectual disability as inappropriate and appropriate labels
  • Promote the following in caring for a person with an intellectual disability: dignity choice relationships contributing
  • Promote positive attitudes toward people with an intellectual disability
  • Explain the role of front line staff in providing individualised support to persons with an intellectual disability in accordance with their preferences and needs
