Mental Health Conditions

All of us experience challenges to our emotional well-being at some stage in our lives, with one in four of us experiencing a problem with our mental health in any one year. Children and adults with learning disabilities are not exempt from this. Research demonstrates that an estimated 25-40% of people with learning disabilities have mental health conditions.

Outcomes of the Mental Health Conditions programme include:

  • Explain how mental health problems are different from typical stress and sadness

  • List factors that contribute to the vulnerability of people with intellectual disabilities developing mental health problems
  • Explain the direct support professional’s role in helping to diagnose and treat mental health problems
  • Describe treatment and support strategies for common mental health conditions.
